Character Information
Lyssa Orum grew up on Brentaal. Her father was from a noble family and her mother was a ranking member of one of the planetary trade guilds. Her father was aware of the fact that marrying her mother wasn’t socially wise but he considered her drive to be valuable. They were known supporters of the Empire and keen on the idea that a better future was being built. Her mother in fact hoped with enough hard work their world would continue to be a center for the arts in their sector and have an increase in trade. Lyssa did not necessarily agree but she was young and didn’t see any way to properly speak out against her parents. She loved them, besides, and at the time Lyssa didn’t want to ever truly disappoint them. Disappointment was just not something she ever wished to express towards them. It wasn’t that her parents were ever cruel to her, it was that there was an absence of kindness in their home.
Eventually she found herself wanting to believe in the Empire. It was easier than rebelling against what her parents wanted. They had her future planned out. Lyssa was to help the family climb higher socially and politically as her parents wanted more respect from the other families. Her paternal grandfather was the only one who seemed to care little for social climbing and niceties. The only true act of rebellion Lyssa ever took was to sign up to join an Imperial academy. She had skills she wished to explore and thought serving the Empire her parents seemed to love would be a way to honor them and forge her own path. Her grandfather had encouraged her to find her own path but was a little disappointed that this was the path she chose. He said nothing about it.
Her mother’s parting words to Lyssa that she better become a proper officer one day or not bother coming home. Success was what they wanted to see if she wasn't going to follow their plans for her.Lyssa being a young adult was hurt but forced herself to both ignore her mother’s words and forget them. She made fast friends at the academy finding her footing quickly. They taught her to play card games when they weren’t in classes and how to relax when she wasn’t actually busy. It gave her the space to learn when it was safe to not act perfectly all the time.
During this time she became well-known by the commandant of the Imperial academy. He understood that her relationship with her parents wasn’t the best and fostered a mentored her during her academy days. He encouraged her love of languages, noting that they would be useful due to her desire to work close to the Wild Space and her genuine curiosity for the Unknown Region.
It was during this time she started also seeking out ways to relax that weren’t solely focused on card game or hanging out with her friends. While checking out a swoop race that was not near the academy she met a young twi’lek artist who was assisting one of the swoop racers with a fresh paint job to make their bike stand out better. Lyssa found the twi’lek charming and accepted an invitation to join him for the race
It quickly turned into them carefully dating. She had warned him about her being a cadet. She didn’t like hiding things from him. Cageta was understanding of her fears but confident they could be together if they used caution. He called her his “star shine” and made her feel like she could truly be herself. She even shared her poor attempts at poetry and her love of learning new languages. He encouraged her and pointed out she could be more than she was right now if she allowed herself. They even began to imagine a life together where they wouldn’t have to be afraid. Lyssa even imagined leaving the academy to enjoy a quiet life studying languages and enjoying the paintings that her dear Cageta loved working on. She was only twenty and still trying to figure out if she really wanted to be in the military or just far from her parents.
The commandant happened to uncover her relationship with Cageta after the young couple had started to believe they were being smart about things. She only found out when her superior brought her into his office to have a weekly chat. Lyssa was heartbroken when she found out her mentor had Cageta arrested. It was apparently supposed to be for her own good to keep her from becoming distracted or a liability to the academy. She found out with a quiet inquiry to a former classmate(who happened to graduate six months prior to this ) who was known for extreme discretion that it was becoming more common for prisoners to be shipped off-world from where they were arrested to never be heard from again. Lyssa was told to accept that her boyfriend would likely never be seen or heard from again.
Lyssa took it in but was truly furious when she gave herself time to think about it. It took her a few months but she found a way to start sending out information to a rebel cell she was aware of. She had to be incredibly careful and learned to use Imperial policy to start keeping people at a distance. She was careful to still play cards with others when not at class to maintain the idea of still being loyal but all that time she plotted to destroy the thing that took the one person who she felt really knew her. Feeding useful information to the rebels to give them a fighting chance gave her a deep sense of satisfaction. Even more once she started to understand their motivations better. Eventually over the course of a six month period Lyssa recognized the danger she was in and was able to convince the rebels she was aiding to take her in. Lyssa did her best to act as a useful asset for them by teaching them about long-range communications and assisting their de facto medic when needed. They one day connected with the larger Rebel Alliance and Lyssa used her skills as a budding communications officer to assist in the rebellion even further. She earned herself as a by-the-books individual during her days in the rebellion.
After the formation of the New Republic Lyssa joined up with the fleet. It was what she knew best and by this point she had truly come to believe in what the New Republic stood for. She holds herself back a bit. It is no secret that she was once an Imperial but she also doesn’t speak of what made her switch sides either.
Motivations:
Lyssa had volunteered to join the FarStar mission for a few reasons. Recently her family has tried to call her back to their homeworld. They think it is high time she gives up her days as a soldier and do something ‘productive’ with her life. Lyssa has no interest in their plans and has decided that putting more distance between them is for the best.
What is known:
Lyssa Orrum is a serious-minded and hard working officer from Brentall. Both her parents supported the Empire. Lyssa does not follow their views and has had little to no contact with them since she was a young adult. She seems to have little interest in climbing the ranks of the New Republic. She is known for caring for younger officers and takes safeguarding pilots back from missions with a dedication that has served her well. She is also rumored to be the communications officer that enjoys picking up duties others do not enjoy. Late nights and tedious messages to take care of are her bread and butter.
She is open about being a former Imperial officer. She even will share about defecting to the Rebel Alliance two years before the Empire fell. When asked why she indicates that it is due to having seen what the Empire truly was. She doesn’t talk much about her childhood but occasionally will share stories about the Imperial academy days if asked.
She also will talk about her love of swoop bikes. In her academy days she and a few of her classmates used to race each other when they could get away with it. Lyssa still loves a good race and will catch holovids of professional races in her spare time.
Lyssa fed information from the Imperial base she was stationed at before things got too dangerous for her. She has aided the rebellion as a communications officer. She also assisted her cell’s medic as needed. Once they properly joined the Alliance, Lyssa was put to use due to her skills in languages as well as her extensive knowledge in Imperial bureaucracy and regulations. They were able to use this to assist in operations that Lyssa is not at liberty to discuss. She is incredibly close-mouthed about those days.
The past four years following the fall of the Empire has seen little change to Lyssa personally. She has hit her mid-twenties and has spent time continuing her work to bring about the kind of future she would like to see. It isn’t an act of rebellion against her past anymore. These days she truly does believe in what the New Republic means to so many people. It’s just that talking about it isn’t something she does during her on or off time. Her relaxation time is for card games and swoop races, not deep conversations that will bare her soul. She thinks the days of waxing poetry are behind her.
